Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to challenge certain calls from the official, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
