Van de Ven Double Halts Everton's Unbeaten Streak at Brand New Stadium

Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
