Several in Labour Seek Keir Starmer Out. The Prime Minister Tells Me He Will Survive – and Britain's Economy Is Set to Strengthen.

"I will be sitting in the same seat by 2027," Starmer remarked, noting that if our interview was successful, he might welcome the interviewer into Downing Street for a follow-up talk in the coming year.

There is never truly time off for those in the top job. Just an hour before our chat started, Starmer had been in calls with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and trying to work out what on earth had transpired in Venezuela, where his close ally, US President Donald Trump, had recently attacked and captured its leader, Nicolás Maduro.

When our interview, which was considerably lengthier than normal, had ended, Maduro had been indicted in New York.

A Reboot for the New Year

With the year starts, Starmer seems to have had a degree of a refresh. Perhaps even just a little downtime with the family at Chequers, the prime minister's country retreat.

This appeared to have resulted in better spirits than at the difficult end of 2025, a awful year politically for him.

But are he and his supporters deluding themselves if they think his standing are poised to get better?

Leadership Questions

The grisly reality for the prime minister is that many of his colleagues think he's ineffective at his job. A faction of them would rather take a risk and get him out sooner rather than later.

However Sir Keir was rejecting the idea in the interview on Saturday morning.

Multiple times he insisted he'd be "evaluated at the next election", maintaining no one would remove his five-year mandate from him – despite the fact that the optimal path of stopping Nigel Farage and Reform UK getting to No 10 could be for Labour to replace leader.

"This is the battle of our generation and I intend to be at the forefront," he declared.

Upcoming Local Votes

The problem for the prime minister is that he will be scrutinised long before then – in a major set of elections in May throughout the UK. He attempted to protest, maybe too much, that they are about who runs councils, and who runs the devolved administrations in Holyrood or Cardiff – and unrelated to Westminster.

Accurate – to some extent. But even though he may be reluctant to acknowledge it, No 10 will be held accountable by those elections too.

Despite this, Sir Keir stating that there were no circumstances under which he would resign, should one of his colleagues contested his leadership for the job, if those elections be disastrous for Labour.

Promises of Improvement

He attempted to explain his low poll ratings by saying the public was reasonably anxious for things to get better. He sought to persuade the interviewer, and the nation, that 2026 would be a change.

The economy would recover notwithstanding rising unemployment, he claimed, when strategies the government put in place during their first rocky year began to bear fruit.

  • He pledged to shut asylum hotels before the current target date of 2029, although he did not put a new date on that.
  • He added too, with the caveat that it was not a done deal, that a peace agreement in Ukraine felt a greater possibility now than at any time since Russia's full-scale invasion.
  • He stated for the first occasion that Western allies were now discussing how to coordinate US and European forces to provide security for Ukraine – to protect a possible peace.

His big point is that soon the country will "turn the corner".

The PM addressing confidently
The Prime Minister appeared more relaxed during the discussion.

Political Challenges

The PM may have spoken with more energy than observed from him for a some time – less tense, maybe, with a longer slot to talk.

But despite encountering pressure from many directions for a bolder strategy, with greater political vision, more dynamism, more speed and more immediacy, his explanations were repeated ones.

When he finds himself in this much political difficulty, should he consider a new narrative?

No administration, and especially not one that has been unpopular for an extended period, gets everything its as desired.

The Prime Minister's problems are not just because government is difficult, but because he and his team have faltered, including in the recent past.

Controversies and Dangers

The PM admitted that he was sorry for saying he was "delighted" to welcome back the Egyptian-British activist Alaa Abd El Fattah to the UK following an backlash when past remarks he'd made in the past – such as calls for Zionists and police to be killed – came to light.

Starmer blamed "the system" for not catching what the activist had said before – a fancier way of saying it wasn't his responsibility.

And he is inviting evident political risks as the year unfolds. His close relationship with the US president entails a new jeopardy after Trump's military action on Venezuela.

Having interviewed Sir Keir Starmer, a ex- human rights lawyer who was against the war in Iraq, over his career, the notion he would be comfortable with this kind of intervention seems far-fetched.

Policy Stances and Pressures

He asserted he was a "lifelong champion of international law" but we "just haven't got the full picture at the moment".

Critics demanded criticise the action before the interview. And the administration is expected to face increased demands to give an definitive view in Parliament in the next few days.

And there has long been bubbling pressure in the Labour ranks to undo or remake some of the outcomes of Brexit.

Sir Keir disputes he's pursuing that, but his new specific plan to move closer with the European trading bloc – the giant economic European trading zone – will likely provoke accusations that he is breaking his pledge never to try to overturn the decisions that followed Brexit.

A decision to integrate into more of the single market will please many on his own side, but it is easy fodder for Reform and the Conservatives to
