It is deeply saddening’: how thirty confined beluga whales are being used as bargaining chips in row over animal cruelty.

Jelly Bean’s daughter Bertie Botts is an adorable little “sweetheart”. The whale Orion – nicknamed “Onion Ring” – is a large but guardian-like friend. Zephyr has “constant motion” and sways like a worm. Lillooet the beluga is the “loving presence” with a gentle spirit.

A group of thirty enclosed beluga whales in a Canada-based amusement park have become pawns in a struggle between a shuttered park, government authorities and advocacy groups.

But those working directly with the whales say the intense controversy over their destiny often ignores the individual traits of the whales who, after living their entire lives in captivity, have been closely studied by the people who interact with them daily.

After the federal government disallowed the transfer of the belugas to China, the controversial facility near Niagara Falls where they are held stated it would consider to end their lives unless the government pays for the expense of their survival. Canada’s fisheries minister has refused that request, placing the thirty whales in an dangerously unstable circumstance.

Intelligent Marine Mammals

Researchers say that belugas’ brain structure, along with their sound replication, cognitive challenges and social skills point to they are remarkably smart mammals – something one caretaker learned personally.

The facility did not reply to a questionnaire, but previously stated: “The whales … get far superior veterinary services and around the clock care than any person in the United Kingdom, or elsewhere.”

Fate in Limbo and Proposed Solutions

Burgess was terminated from the park in the spring following the demise of a beluga, an ailing beluga the park staff had to humanely kill. She said the facility suspected particulars of the death were shared to the news outlets and she was fired not long after.

The uncertainty over the whales’ outcome has left Burgess and other caretakers in anguish. She says the park’s warning to euthanize its whales is a bargaining chip and is a “practically unfeasible” endeavor, adding any attempts to humanely kill even a individual beluga would require “immense personnel”, equipment and specialized tools.

“It cannot happen in hell the employees would ever do it,” she said.

Burgess backs calls for the whales to be transferred immediately from the park, with its crumbling tanks and reduced personnel.

In late September, Canada’s fisheries minister denied a proposal to send the whales to an overseas location.

“Allowing the application would have meant a perpetual situation in enclosure and a return to performance for audiences,” the official commented. “As Canadians, we know that marine mammals belong in the ocean, not in enclosures for our entertainment. I could not in ethical standing approve an relocation that would perpetuate the treatment these belugas have endured.”

But the former trainer said the official’s statements indicate a broader incorrect perception of the circumstances of existence for belugas born in captivity.

“The society needs to grasp these are whales that have spent their whole lives in enclosed habitats and they will need human care for the rest of their years,” she said. “Many just don’t realize that it’s not as straightforward as saying ‘shut it down’.”
