Government Official Confirms MoD Examining Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Staff Advised to Refrain from Secret Talk in Vehicles.

An defence official has confirmed that the MoD is currently examining the potential threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and staff have been told to refrain from talking about classified information in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for MoD Staff

During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret classification in any car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all automobile, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, the minister responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

The announcement comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to disable buses and bring disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

The broader defence environment highlights the significance of robust measures and caution in all areas of official activities, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
