An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was publicly declared, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the close of the month rose in the hours before former President Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.
One account, which registered on the site last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a initial bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.
However these probabilities had increased to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in positions immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.
A small number of other individuals also earned significant sums from similar wagers.
Some lawmakers are growing concerned.
A new rule put forward on Monday would prevent federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.
Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from elections to current affairs.
The industry faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Insider trading is a crime in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.
A company executive for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
