2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Comes After Mixed Response

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last fall.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure notified staff about this decision through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the need for a more defined game identity.

Ismailer stated that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

Trend of Strategic Hires

The news follows a comparable step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock development group.

I know you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”

With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last autumn’s the game demo was informative. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It uncovered the need for a sharper brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the input to heart and overhauled the title with a renewed direction - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our fans.

The trust in Project ETHOS increases every day. To further the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Director of 31st Union. Following a period of discussions, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s management and experience in the competitive gaming field is vast, having dedicated the recent years producing and leading some of the most well-known series in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.

Experience of the Incoming Head

Brinkman currently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Vision

Project Ethos was revealed in last year alongside a public demo. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the style."

Project Ethos has not yet received an announced debut schedule or supported systems, but players can anticipate additional details as production progresses.
